Organic scintillators

Plastic organic scintillators are sensitive to X-rays, gamma rays, fast neutrons and charged particles and are characterized by relatively high light emission-typically 25-30% NaI(Tl)-and a short decay time-about 2 ns. This makes the material suitable for fast measurements.
The exact emission wavelength and decay time depend on the type of organic activator and the host material. For this reason, Luxium offers a wide range of plastic scintillators, each of which is suitable for a specific application.
Plastic scintillators are produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. All raw materials undergo extensive purification before polymerization. After that, the scintillators are machined to final dimensions with diamond tools to provide optimum quality surfaces for total internal reflection.

Luxium supplies most solid scintillators with the surfaces prepared to optimize light collection. For cast plates, the surfaces are intact and the edges are machined and polished or diamond milled. The rods, rings, and blocks are machined and polished or coated with a diffuse reflective paint such as BC-620. This type of reflector is used only when little scintillation light is reflected from scintillator surfaces before the light reaches the PMT. Most applications require finished surfaces. Scintillators can also be purchased as finished detectors. These incorporate light guides, photomultiplier tubes, special radiation entrance windows, and light-tight enclosures (or metal housings).
